Stressful situations are part of all of our lives. Sometimes we make the stressful times more challenging by forgetting to care for ourselves. Pressing the reset button is a great tool to ensure we keep a level head during life’s challenging times.
There are many ways, simple to elaborate, to press the button! Here are 5 things to try the next time life is giving you a run for your money:
1) Make a daily moment for yourself. Enjoying a cup of coffee or tea (without tapping into electronics) before the rest of the house wakes up if your a morning person or if evening is better for you try caffeine free tea after everyone settles down for the night. Tea comes in so many varieties there’s one for every taste. Having a little quiet time ritual each day can help focus the mind and give us something to look forward to even on the most stressful of day.
2) Take a walk. It doesn’t have to be long, you don’t have to count your steps or track your heart rate, just get outside and see the sights. It’s amazing how different the world looks when we walk through it versus driving by it. Walking can clear the mind and also be a good time to stop and smell the roses…literally!
3) Rub your ear lobes. Yes, you read that right! It may sound a little silly but if you gently rub or tug your ear lobes not only can it relieve stress, it can sometimes ease headaches. It only takes a minute but it can be the most zen minute of the day!
4) Do a good deed. There is little in life that feels better than helping our fellow humans. There are tons of ways go about it, too! Donating extra clothes or household items is cost free and decluttering can reduce stress. Paying it forward is another option…even paying for the next person in line’s coffee can give you a warm fuzzy feeling! If you want to go all out, consider volunteering at a local charity or organization. Being part of the solution in your local community can boost confidence and be a great way to feel connected.
5) Take a break. Whether it’s a Sunday drive in a neighboring town, a day trip to the shore, an afternoon at a local park, a weekend adventure or an out-of-town vacation a break from the everyday surroundings can be a great way to refresh and rejuvenate a stressed-out mind. Getting away doesn’t have to cost a fortune if you plan it out in advance, either. Going places on the off season is often very relaxing with more affordable accomodations, little traffic and lots of opportunities to enjoy the local area and people without the hustle and bustle of in-season crowds. Staying with a group of friends or family can be a good option too (so long as it’s a positive group of people.) Group trips reduce costs for accommodations and things like cooking, driving and cleaning can be shared. When everyone does a little work and everyone also gets a lot of reprieve.
